Chapter Twenty-One
I drove back to the compound like a demon. Aubrey called ahead so they were ready when we got there. Several of the medical team waited in the driveway, and when they took Able from the backseat, he still had a pulse.
In the commotion, Zieke managed to slip away. I was worried because now Denazen knew where the compound was, but Dax assured me that even if they did eventually come at us, no one would get past the elevator and live to tell the taleâwhatever that meant. But, true or not, the fear would be there now. Each night when we went to sleep, that nagging voice would whisper, What if tonight is the night they come for us?
The first thing I did upon arrival was track Ginger down. I wanted to know what our next move was. We were running out of time to find a cure for Mom. She insisted there would be a discussion about everything in the morning and that tonight everyone was taking a much-needed night off. Knowing it was pointless to argue, Iâd gone in search of Mom.
I knocked this time, and when she called that the door was open, I slipped inside and closed the door behind me.
She was sitting cross-legged on the edge of her bed, going through the contents of a large shoebox. She didnât look up as I settled beside her. âDo I need to tell you what you did was stupid?â
âNope.â
She huffed, and that was it. No lecture. No killer stare. She just continued to sift through the items in her box.
âI never expected to meet you,â she said after a few moments. âI thought about you all the time. Iâd talk to Kale for hours, coming up with scenarios about your life.â
I snickered. âYeah? What did that look like?â
She finally looked up. She was smiling. âThose first years, I imagined you in pigtails. Little curls tied up with bright green ribbons.â
I shook my head. âNope. No pigtails. I was more of a pony girl.â
She reached across and lightly tugged on a small section of my hair. âIt wasnât until you were three years old that he told me your name.â
I swallowed back the lump in my throat. âYou didnât know what he named me?â
Her voice hitched, and she inhaled deeply, pausing for a moment before saying, âI was going to call you Bennet, a way to honor your father.â
âIf it makes you feel better, Iâve always hated my name.â
She rolled her eyes. âEveryone hates their name. I mean, Sueshanna? Do you know how hard grade school was for me?â
âYeah. You win.â
We both laughed, and she set the box down behind her. âAs you grew, I pictured your first day of school. How, in another life, I would have walked you in and watched you go. You would make friends and paint pictures and learn to ride your bicycle.â Her smile faded. âMarshall gave me crumbs. Little bits and pieces about your life, who you were. Always just enough to make me ravenous for more.
